Strengthening Science and Mathematics Education in Difficult and Very Difficult Schools in Kalkudah Educational Zone

Out of an approved cadre of 86 Mathematics teachers,
only 29 are currently available

The Kalkudah Educational Zone, located in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka, is home to a largely rural population whose livelihoods depend mainly on agriculture and fishing. The geographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the region have created persistent challenges in the field of education.
Out of an approved cadre of 86 Mathematics teachers, only 29 are currently available, resulting in a shortage of 57 teachers. This severe shortage has had a direct impact on examination performance, with poor outcomes recorded in Mathematics.
It is important to note that without a pass in GCE (O/L) Mathematics, students are unable to progress to GCE (A/L). Having assessed the need across four educational zones, the trustees of OSUK are pleased to approve funding for this project.

Funding for 15 full-time Mathematics teachers.

The primary objective of this project is to improve the pass rate in Mathematics, thereby enabling more students to qualify for GCE (A/L) studies. It is important to note that without a pass in GCE (O/L) Mathematics, students are unable to progress to GCE (A/L) education.

Having considered a project proposal received from the Kalkudah Educational Zone through Our Society Batticaloa, the trustees of OSUK are pleased to announce the approval of funding for 15 full-time Mathematics teachers to serve in 15 deserving rural schools. Each teacher will receive a monthly payment of Rs. 25,000/-, amounting to a total monthly cost of Rs. 375,000/-.

We sincerely thank our donors once again for their continued support and generosity.
