In 2016, a group of Sri Lankans living in the homeland, along with the Tamil Diaspora worldwide, came together to establish Our Society (OS). The primary objective of OS is to empower members of Sri Lankan society by focusing on areas such as education, economy, empowerment, and the creation of a healthy and uplifted community. With a strong emphasis on transparency, truth, and selfless fieldwork, OS has made significant strides in various domains to bring about positive change.
Improving Education
OS has concentrated its efforts on uplifting primary education in 57 underprivileged schools located in Tamils inhabited districts. It has also extended support to 15 Tamil cultural classes, aiming to preserve and promote cultural heritage. The organisation collaborates with 137 OS volunteer teachers who work tirelessly to improve education at the grassroots level. By building new classrooms, refurbishing existing infrastructure, and providing sports equipment, OS aims to enhance the physical and mental well-being of students.
Workshops and Exam Preparation
In partnership with the Eastern Province Director of Education and the Rural Development Department, OS organised mathematics workshops for 6,000 underperforming GCSE (O/L) students. These workshops, conducted by subject specialists, aimed to improve students’ mathematical abilities before their O/L exams. By addressing the root cause of underperformance, OS strives to ensure students receive a quality education and have equal opportunities.
Recognising the importance of higher education, OS provides financial assistance and regular guidance to underprivileged university students. Currently, 80 students benefit from this fund, enabling them to pursue their academic aspirations and become future leaders.
Women Empowerment
OS is committed to creating future leaders among women. The organisation has provided training to 15 Nursing Care Assistants and 25 women in weaving. Additionally, it has supported 20 single mothers in starting their own cottage industries, facilitating their financial independence and self-sufficiency.
Health Awareness – Medical Camps
OS has taken on the challenge of improving health and communal consciousness by organising 28 Medical Camps in different remote villages. These camps not only provide medical treatment but also cover a wide range of topics, including child welfare, drugs, child abuse, and livelihood. Each camp benefits over 350 individuals, fostering a healthier and more informed society.
COVID-19 Relief Efforts
During the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, OS has actively supported low-income families by distributing dry food rations to approximately 5,000 households in the North and East regions. The organisation also supplied medical equipment, including ventilators and pulse oximeters, to regional hospitals. Furthermore, OS commissioned an oxygen generator and built a structure to accommodate this facility at the Kaluwanchikudi hospital, which now provides oxygen to various medical institutions in the region. Additionally, it offered online classes, focusing on subjects such as ICT, English, and O/L exam preparation, ensuring students continued their education despite the pandemic-induced disruptions.
In conclusion The journey of Our Society (OS) in Sri Lanka has been marked by significant achievements in education, empowerment, and healthcare. With a committed team of volunteers and the support of the Sri Lankan diaspora, OS continues to work towards building a society that is inclusive, empowered, and conscious of the needs of all its members. By adhering to principles of transparency, truth, and selflessness, OS sets a remarkable example for community-driven initiatives that strive to transform societies for the better.
